A record number of Brits are leaving the country in search of some sun; almost 25% of us are considering buying a property abroad sometime in the next year, says Foreign Currency Direct. Currently around 500,000 Britons own property in Spain.

People are said to be fed up of British living and they want to recapture a sense of community, (FCD). Increased house prices in the UK are also pushing Brits to move abroad, particularly young people.

The top destination for Brits buying abroad is Spain at 24% (YouGov, 2007). Spain is becoming very fashionable and popular to buy property, with a great infrastructure and lifestyle people can adapt easily and live here year round.

GE Money Home Lending interviewed 100 mortgage brokers, who revealed that Spain is the best option for a long-term investment, with better rental potential than France or Portugal. The quality of life, cuisine and investment opportunities contribute to Spain's appeal.

For many years Britons have bought property in Spain to spend their retirement, but nowadays buyers are of all ages and many are under 35. As well as investing and renting out their property, as many as 64% want to live in their overseas home, according to the research by NatWest.

The coast of Spain will never lose its physical attributes and tourism and residential purchases are increasing. Mallorca property is very popular and has seen price rises of about 10% per annum. Palma's Paseo Dalt Murada has been labelled the most expensive street in Spain; the island is considered a great long-term investment opportunity.
